Today is Day Three of the Winter Olympics but it’s Day One of the Federal Budget Olympics. So, sticking with an Olympics theme, here is a chart we titled “The Taebaek Mountains of OCO Spending since Fiscal Year 2001.”

We’re using the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 revised number for OCO spending of “just” $69 billion. This is in conflict with some of the budget documents released by OMB today which state that OCO spending for FY19 is actually $89 billion. We’ll be watching that conflict unfold.

But we put this chart together, and named it after the South Korean mountain range where the Winter Olympics are being held, to keep you informed of where your tax dollars are headed. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a downhill event in Budget Olympics, at least with defense spending. Because, even though OCO spending is supposedly “off-budget” it certainly adds to the mountainous deficit.
