At Taxpayers for Common Sense, we are dedicated to advancing fiscally responsible solutions for surface transportation funding. We believe in a “fix-it-first” strategy that prioritizes maintaining and repairing existing infrastructure rather than committing resources to expensive new projects. This approach helps address the growing funding gap caused by declining fuel tax revenues and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.

We are also exploring alternative funding mechanisms, such as Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) charges and fees for electric vehicles, to create fair and sustainable revenue streams. At the same time, we push back against short-sighted legislative extensions that fail to tackle the systemic challenges in surface transportation financing. Instead, we call on policymakers to adopt long-term strategies that align with fiscal responsibility while addressing the nation’s critical infrastructure needs.
