Statement by Ms. Ryan Alexander, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense on the fiscal year 2014 Budget Deal

“It is clear that the budget deal is a bad deal for taxpayers. The package doesn’t tackle the long-term fiscal issues surrounding entitlements or tax reform. The deal’s authors are using a patchwork of questionable offsets and budgetary optical illusions instead of responsibly replacing possible across-the-board sequestration cuts with real deficit reduction. This is just a thinly veiled attempt to hide real spending increases that bust the budgetary caps both chambers and the President agreed to only two years ago.

“It is ridiculous that some lawmakers are crowing about how this deal represents a two-year delay to the budgetary crisis. That’s a pretty low bar for accomplishments. The proposed budget deal doesn’t actually solve anything and sows the seeds for bigger fights in the future. Congress should reject this deal and come up with an honest, responsible plan that makes the hard spending and revenue decisions necessary to put the country on a path to a sounder fiscal future.”
