Washington, D.C. – The following is a statement from Cena Swisher, Senior Director of Taxpayers for Common Sense on the proposed elimination of the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV):
After a billion dollars and poor results, the PNGV program has clearly proven to be a lemon. President Bush should be congratulated for recalling this wasteful program.
This program is corporate welfare at its worst. PNGV is a research slush fund benefiting mainly auto and diesel engine manufacturers, and is unsafe at any price. Over the past eight years, the federal government has spent more than $1 billion on this program to create a “super-efficient” car, yet average fuel economy for automobiles has declined to its lowest point in 20 years.
Eliminating the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, run by the Department of Energy, could save taxpayers a $1.65 billion over the next five years.
