TCS submitted comments to the US Forest Service in response to its draft rulemaking, “Special Areas, Roadless Area Conservation: National Forest System Lands in Alaska” (RIN: 0596-AD51), published on November 23, 2021. In 2020, the Forest Service finalized a rule to remove prohibitions against logging and roadbuilding -aka “roadless” protections – in 9.2 million acres of the Tongass National Forest. Without those protections, money-losing timber sales would have likely increased. Repealing the 2020 rule and ending the Tongass exemption to the national 2001 Roadless Rule is the right move for taxpayers.
