Today, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt is testifying before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee to discuss the agency’s budget. [Watch the hearing.] Usually, these hearings focus on the details of programs and priorities. As a taxpayer watchdog, we hope the hearing goes further to include critical and thorough discussion of the administrator’s questionable spending to date.
Whether it’s the $43,000 soundproof phone booth, the unnecessary lease of a fully loaded Chevy Suburban, the unprecedented security team costs, extravagant first-class travel, or any of the other documented spending excesses, we hope the Senators sitting on the Appropriations subcommittee hold Mr. Pruitt to account.
We expect cabinet officials to remember that the money they spend in carrying out their offices is not personal money. It is taxpayer money, and their spending decisions need to reflect the needs of the taxpayer, nothing less and nothing more.
